Speed cameras operate on school days from 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM.During these hours, drivers must adhere to the posted 20 mph speed limit in designated school zones.
Speed Threshold: Vehicles traveling more than 10 mph over the posted speed limit (i.e., 31 mph or more in a 20 mph zone) will trigger a violation.
Fines: Each violation incurs a $50 civil penalty, with an additional $25 late fee if unpaid.
No Impact on License or Insurance: These violations are not reported to the DMV and do not affect insurance rates.
Violations are mailed to the vehicle's registered owner and include:
A timestamped photograph of the vehicle
A link to view video evidence of the infraction
Instructions for paying or contesting the ticket online
If you believe a ticket was issued in error, you can contest it through the Albany Parking Violations Bureau.Details on the appeal process are included in the violation notice.
A comprehensive engineering study, including crash data, speed surveys, and traffic volumes, was conducted to select the school zones for camera installation.Notably, Albany High School and Albany School of Humanities were identified as two of the most dangerous school zones in the city.During a week-long survey, over 94% of vehicles monitored in these zones were speeding more than 10 mph over the posted limit.
A recent speed study across all 20 school zones revealed that a majority had over 2,000 violations per day, with some schools, including All Saints Academy, The Albany Academies, and Academy of the Holy Names, recording over 4,000 violations per day.
Studies indicate that automated photo enforcement can reduce dangerous speeding by as much as 88%.
In addition to the speed camera program, Albany has implemented several other initiatives to enhance street safety:
Citywide Speed Limit Reduction: Effective January 1, 2025, the citywide speed limit was reduced to 25 mph to improve safety, enhance walkability, and support the Vision Zero strategy aimed at eliminating all traffic-related fatalities and severe injuries.
Street Improvement Projects: Major traffic calming measures, improved bicycle infrastructure, and enhanced pedestrian safety features have been completed on Madison Avenue, Clinton Avenue, Lark Street, New Scotland Avenue, and Henry Johnson Boulevard.Ongoing projects focus on similar improvements on Central Avenue, Frisbie Avenue, and Brevator Street.
