In August 2025, the City of Doral officially launched a network of school-zone speed cameras to improve safety for students, pedestrians, and cyclists. The program, authorized by Florida’s HB 657 legislation, targets drivers exceeding posted school-zone speed limits by more than 10 mph. This initiative follows a growing trend across Florida to use automated enforcement for safer streets.
The cameras began operation on August 14, 2025, with a 30-day warning period running through September 14, 2025. During this time, violators receive warnings instead of fines. Full enforcement starts immediately after the warning period ends.
The program covers 18 designated school zones across Doral:
The cameras use radar-based technology and operate:
They are not active on weekends, holidays, or non-school days. Clear signage is posted to notify drivers entering a monitored zone.
Violations for exceeding the speed limit by more than 10 mph result in a $100 civil fine. There are no points added to your driver’s license and no insurance rate impact. Vehicle owners have 30 days to pay or request a hearing. If the registered owner was not the driver, they may submit an affidavit to transfer responsibility.
Revenue from the fines supports Doral’s school crossing guard program and other public safety initiatives. City officials emphasize the program’s goal is student safety, not revenue generation.
Mayor Christi Fraga has stated that the cameras will help protect children walking, biking, or riding scooters to school. Local media outlets have reported generally positive community feedback, particularly from parents and school administrators concerned about speeding near campuses.
